Notwithstanding the detailed notes kept by the photographer, Eric Lomax, there are several pictures for which the location was not recorded and the details for other photographs taken on the same date may not be relevant. This photograph was one of these.
The photograph shows LMS Caledonian Railway, McIntosh ‘Dunalastair IV’ superheated 4-4-0 locomotive with an 8-wheel tender, having individual springs for each axle box, and the original type of chimney. The right hand side steam chest anti-vacuum valve, only fitted on the superheated ‘Dunalastairs’ is visible just below the side of the smokebox. The location is the LMS locomotive shed at Stirling identified by the gasometer in the background. Eric Lomax recorded the date as 7/8/1937 and the locomotive No. 14442. The smoke box carries a shed code number plate; these were first fitted to Scottish LMS engines in 1934/35.
(Update 3 April 2016) - The information published at page 30 January/February Journal omitted to include the location - Stirling LMS shed with the prominent gasometer in the background. Apologies to Frank Harvey who supplied the information for this oversight. The Eric Lomax List of photographs has been amended to include this detail.
A further Eric Lomax picture and description is here.
